Foundations of Psychoanalytic Couple Therapy distance learning course will focus on special topics and challenges in the practice of psychoanalytic couple therapy, using didactic lectures, case presentations, discussion, and advance readings. The course will feature presenters from the International Psychotherapy Institute and colleagues from around the world and the US.

Wednesday, November 19, from 9:45 am -11:45 am US ETBringing a clinical example of her work with a couple recovering from an affair, Kate Thompson explores the meaning and function of affairs, linking to theoretical ideas on containment, manic defense, fear of merger, attachment trauma and Oedipal anxiety. Kate discusses therapeutic technique and stance to support couple psychotherapists in helping a relationship to recover from this fracturing of their couple boundary.Learning Objectives:A workshop designed to help explore the meaning and function of an affair within a couple relationship.A workshop to consider clinical technique and difficulties in maintaining a therapeutic stance when working with couples and affairs.
